Hello, beautiful friends! Today I want to share a personal story that surprised me in the best way.
Recently, I tackled something I had been putting off for far too long: clearing out two rooms in my house. You know those projects that just feel too overwhelming, so you keep walking past them? That was me. But when I finally took action, something unexpected happened. Not only did my home feel lighter, I felt lighter. I had more clarity, more energy, and even took bold action in my business afterward.
This experience reminded me of an important truth: clearing physical space can clear our energy too. And in midlife—when many of us are seeking a reset—this can be a game-changer.
My Decluttering Story

I started with my office. Between leftover holiday clutter (yes, from last Christmas!) and random business papers, it had become a catch-all. I sorted through drawers, recycled what I could, and hauled out bags of unnecessary stuff. Just that first round of clearing gave me momentum and a surprising lift in my mood.
Next came what I lovingly call “the dog’s room.” Our pups, Jake and Pepper, sleep there, and over time the room had collected dust, dog hair, and—let’s be honest—a whole lot of forgotten storage. I found old paperwork from my nursing career, kids’ keepsakes, and furniture that no longer served a purpose. Bit by bit, I sorted, donated, recycled, and even let go of an old dresser. By the time I finished, the room felt fresh, open, and new.
Here’s the amazing part: the very next day, ideas started flowing for my podcast and my new program for women in midlife. I found myself writing, planning, and taking steps that had felt stuck before. It was no coincidence. Clearing clutter opened up the energy I needed to move forward.
Why Decluttering Matters in Midlife
Clutter doesn’t just take up physical space—it takes up mental, emotional, and even spiritual space. When we’re surrounded by stuff we don’t need, it weighs us down. In midlife, many of us are already in a season of release—children leaving home, shifting careers, redefining priorities. Physical decluttering mirrors the inner work we’re doing and supports the transition into who we are becoming.
Here are just a few benefits I noticed (and you can too):
Mental clarity: Less distraction makes it easier to think and make decisions.
Emotional release: Letting go of items tied to guilt or regret is incredibly freeing.
Physical energy: Open, clean spaces make you feel lighter and more energized.
Momentum: Taking action in your home often spills over into other areas—like your work, relationships, or personal goals.
How to Get Started
Decluttering isn’t always easy. It takes courage to face our “stuff,” especially items tied to memories or identities we’ve outgrown. But letting go creates space for courage, confidence, and clarity.
If you’re ready to try, start small:
Clear out one drawer, one shelf, or that chair where things tend to pile up.
Ask yourself: Does this item support who I am and who I’m becoming?
Donate, recycle, or gift items instead of just tossing them.
Notice how you feel afterward—and celebrate that progress!
Remember: you’re not losing something, you’re gaining space for new opportunities, ideas, and energy.
A Midlife Invitation
Midlife isn’t about holding on to everything. It’s about courageously creating space for what matters most. Decluttering may seem like just another chore, but it can become a doorway to transformation.
So this week, I encourage you to choose one small space to clear. Notice how you feel, celebrate your action, and let that momentum carry you forward.
And if you’d like encouragement and community while you take these steps, I’d love to have you join my Flourishing After Forty Facebook group. Share what you’re decluttering, and let’s cheer each other on as we make room for what truly lights us up.
Remember: midlife is the perfect time to release what no longer serves you and courageously step into the space you’ve created.
Until next time, take care of your beautiful self!
