Hello, friends! Welcome back to an inspirational story on the Midlife with Courage™ blog. In today’s post, I am thrilled to share the incredible story of Zulma Williams, a licensed clinical social worker and mental health therapist. Prepare yourselves for a blend of laughter, courage, and tenacious pursuit of dreams, no matter what life throws your way.

A Courageous Leap Into the Unknown
Zulma Williams didn't just settle at any point in her life. She graduated at the age of 51 and fearlessly jumped into her dream profession despite all odds. It's incredible how she became independently licensed at 53 and a half, redefining what it means to pursue passions "later" in life. Personally, I find this part of her story so motivating. Who cares about the timeline? As Zulma puts it, you're already a bit older anyway, so why not?
A Journey Across Continents
Becoming a social worker at age 53 wasn't her only courageous endeavor. Zulma’s bravery is evident even before that when she moved from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to the United States at 31 years old. She describes stepping off the plane in December of 1996 as like walking into a movie set.
She faced significant challenges, notably a language barrier. But through perseverance, patience from kind strangers, and her own relentless spirit, Zulma adapted and thrived. It’s heartwarming to imagine her living by the California beach, soaking up sunsets after a day’s work.
Turning Challenges Into Triumph
Challenges sprouted again when Zulma was diagnosed with breast cancer just after earning her Bachelor of Social Work. Instead of seeing this as a hindrance, she took it as a test of how badly she wanted to fulfill her dream of becoming a therapist. I admire how she didn't let anything stop her – though it delayed her plans, it also fortified her passion and resilience.
A Therapist Who Listens Differently
Zulma possesses a special gift: she listens to what isn’t being said. As a therapist, she doesn’t dictate; instead, she guides her clients to uncover their own truths. She likens her role to that of a GPS and her clients as drivers. Only they can decide how to navigate life’s roads, and Zulma is there to offer alternative routes when needed. Her story reminds us of the strength in seeking guidance while owning our own paths.
Life Experience as a Teaching Tool
What I particularly love about Zulma is how her life experiences, including cultural backgrounds and overcoming personal traumas, enrich her counseling practice. It's not just textbook knowledge she provides; it’s empathy forged from real-life struggles. It's proof that age and experience make us more compassionate and effective people.
Embracing Who You Are
Now, let's talk about the "keeping it real" part – she’s known as the “swearing therapist.” Zulma is authentically herself with her straightforward, no-fluff approach, and if that means a bit of colorful language, then that’s part of the therapeutic process. It's about breaking down barriers to connect more openly and honestly. Her unique style encourages clients to embrace who they are and communicate freely.
Zulma’s candidness in her practice is both refreshing and empowering, especially to women over 40 reading this. It’s another reminder that we should all speak and act in ways true to ourselves. Life’s too short for anything less!
Final Thoughts: Keep Moving Forward
As we wrap up today’s post, I’d love to leave you with Zulma's empowering words: “If you woke up today, your mission in life is not completed.” She urges us all to keep placing one foot in front of the other. Remember your track record—it's full of overcoming challenges, and whatever you face now is no different.
Thank you for joining me in exploring Zulma Williams’ journey of courage and resilience. I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me. Stay tuned for more uplifting stories soon on the Midlife with Courage™ blog. And remember, take care of your beautiful self!
